You can do all that, for sure; it just doesn't feel like a multiplayer experience. Everyone is solo, even if hanging around together. Multiplayer is "ambient" in NMS. Game is simply too vast for multiplayer to be anything other than arguably meaningless. This is a by-product of its original design. Really though it's only worth it if you want to be mayor of a town you help develop, have minor interactions with your citizens, and play judge to their disputes.
